SUBJECT: THE UNORGANIZED MILITIA AND INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY
Let’s clear something up right away: when most people hear the word "militia," they think of guys in mismatched camo running around the woods with outdated maps and a questionable supply of canned beans. But if you’ve been paying attention to the law: specifically Title 10 of the U.S. Code: you’d know that the "unorganized militia" isn’t some fringe group. It’s you. It’s me. It’s basically every able-bodied person between the ages of 17 and 45.
If you consider yourself a firearms enthusiast or a survivalist, you have likely claimed the rights associated with the Second Amendment. But rights don’t exist in a vacuum; they come tethered to responsibilities. In the modern era, being a "Citizen Soldier" isn’t about waiting for a bugle call. It’s about maintaining a state of personal readiness that ensures you aren’t a liability to your community when things go sideways.
DIRECTIVE 01: UNDERSTAND THE LEGAL FRAMEWORK
The militia is divided into two parts: the organized militia (the National Guard and Naval Militia) and the unorganized militia. Historically, the unorganized militia was the pool of citizens who could be called upon in times of invasion or insurrection. While the likelihood of a formal call-up by the Governor is statistically low in the 21st century, the moral and practical obligation remains.
The modern responsibility of the unorganized militia member is proficiency. If you own a tool for the defense of yourself or the state, you are ethically obligated to know how to use it safely and effectively. Simply owning a rifle and a few boxes of ammo doesn’t make you a protector; it makes you a consumer. True readiness requires a shift from a consumer mindset to a practitioner mindset.

DIRECTIVE 02: THE TRIAD OF READINESS: GEAR, TRAINING, AND MEDICAL
Being a functional member of the unorganized militia requires more than just a membership at a local range. It requires a balanced focus on three specific areas: your gear, your tactical proficiency, and your medical capabilities.
1. GEAR: BEYOND THE BASICS
For many survivalists, gear is the fun part. We like the high-end optics, the plate carriers, and the latest modular handguards. But for the modern citizen soldier, gear should be standardized and functional. You need a reliable primary and secondary firearm, enough magazines to sustain an engagement, and a way to carry them that doesn’t fall apart after a three-mile hike.
Check out our current selection of essential hardware and products to ensure your kit is up to professional standards.
2. PROFICIENCY: TRAINING IS THE CURRENCY
Owning a piano doesn’t make you a pianist. Similarly, owning a firearm doesn’t make you a marksman. Firearms enthusiasts often spend thousands on guns but zero on professional instruction. The unorganized militia member must be proficient in:
- Weapon manipulation under stress.
- Understanding of movement and cover.
- Legal requirements for the use of force.
3. THE MEDICAL MANDATE: TOURNIQUET TRAINING
This is where most people drop the ball. In any high-intensity situation: whether it’s a natural disaster, a massive car accident, or a violent encounter: you are far more likely to need to save a life with a medical kit than you are to take one with a firearm.
If you carry a gun, you must carry a medical kit. If you have a holster on your belt, you should have a tourniquet within reach. Tourniquet training is not a "nice to have" skill; it is a fundamental requirement of the citizen soldier.

DIRECTIVE 03: THE CORPSMAN CONNECTION
At 2A Arms LLC, we don’t just sell gear because it looks cool. Our mission is rooted in real-world experience. Our owner, Joshua Soutullo, didn't just read about trauma in a book. As a veteran Navy Hospital Corpsman, Joshua spent his career in the high-stakes environment of military medicine.
When a Corpsman is in the field, their job is twofold: they are a combatant when necessary, but their primary mission is "Doc." They are the ones who run toward the chaos when everyone else is looking for cover. That background is the DNA of 2A Arms LLC. We believe that every citizen should have the tools and the knowledge to provide life-saving care.
Joshua’s experience informs everything we do: from the products we stock to the courses we offer. We aren't interested in "mall ninja" gear. We are interested in gear that works when your adrenaline banging and your heartrate is at 200 BPM and your hands are shaking.
DIRECTIVE 04: THE CRITICAL NEED FOR TRAUMA SKILLS
Most people are familiar with basic first aid: Band-Aids for scrapes and ice for bruises. But the unorganized militia needs to think in terms of trauma. We are talking about massive hemorrhage, airway management, and chest wounds.
We’ve seen a lot of people make some pretty big mistakes when it comes to medical prep. You can read more about that in our deep dive on [common medical training mistakes](https://www.2aarmsandmedical.com/blog/Medical news and training/are-you-making-these-common-tourniquet-training-mistakes-).
A tourniquet is arguably the most important piece of survival gear you can own. However, if you bought a $5 "recon" tourniquet off a random auction site, you’ve bought a death sentence. You need TCCC-approved equipment and the training to apply it in the dark, with one hand, while wet.

DIRECTIVE 05: INTEGRATING INTO THE COMMUNITY
The "Soldier" part of "Citizen Soldier" implies discipline and organization. The "Citizen" part implies community. The unorganized militia is most effective when it is composed of individuals who know their neighbors and can work together.
This means:
- Communication: Having a plan for when the cell towers go down.
- Training and Skill resources: Knowing who in your circle has what skills and training. Tactical, Medicinal, Farming, Animal husbandry, Mechanically, Carpentry, etc.
- Shared Standards: Ensuring that if you had to hand a magazine to your neighbor, it would actually fit their rifle.
Our calendar of upcoming events is designed to help you meet like-minded individuals who take these responsibilities seriously. It’s about building a culture of preparedness that goes beyond the keyboard.

DIRECTIVE 06: ELIMINATE THE "GOOD ENOUGH" MENTALITY
In the survivalist community, there is a dangerous trend of settling for "good enough." Complacency kills.
- "I haven't shot in a year, but I grew up hunting, so I'm good."
- "I have a first aid kit in the trunk, I'm good."
- "I'll figure it out when the time comes."
System Error: Logic Not Found.
When the time comes, you will not rise to the occasion; you will sink to the level of your training. If your training level is zero, that is exactly where you will be when the pressure is on. The responsibility of the unorganized militia is to ensure that their "level" is high enough to actually make a difference.

2A Arms LLC was founded to bridge the gap between the average citizen and the professional level of readiness. We provide the firearms, the accessories, and: most importantly: the medical training required to fulfill the role of a modern Citizen Soldier.
